Panem

"In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts." The author references slight geographic and economic hints on the whereabouts these districts may be. Looking at the picture of North America, we would like you to post general locations of the Capitol and as many of the 12 districts(or 13 counting the smoldering remains of the last) as well as any clues in the text that assisted in your decision.

  1. It seemed that they were numbered as they moved away from the capital, so I was envisioning the capital as Washington, D.C. Often the East Coast is more highly regarded than the rest of the country, so I was thinking districts 1 and 2 would be the New York and Boston areas respectively. Then the rest of the districts would be further west. California could be district 13.

  2. I believe the Capitol is Los Angeles, because it is consumed with glitz, hype and video. District 13 would be the former capital of our nation along with the New England states. Obliterated to obviously rid the country of any memory of its founding principles. District 12 would include West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania on up through Maine. The main resource was underground coal mining, which is true of the first three named states. District 11 would be the corn belt, Appalachia, Delta region and southeast states, because of the amount of agriculture found there. District 1 would be California because it feeds the Capitol its luxury items. District 3 would be Illinois and Michigan because of manufacturing. District 4 would be either Alaska/Washington or Texas/Gulf of Mexico region because of the fishing.

  3. Great references! I never associated the Capitol with California, but the glamour and superfical alterations make total sense. I was thinking that the districts were in some sort of geographical order in distance from the Capitol, so all of your guesses make sense. Thanks for the post.
